Education loan
Also written Educational loan · Student loan
A loan for higher education, requiring an admission offer before it can be applied for, which can also be applied for through the government's Vidyalakshmi Portal using one common application form across multiple banks.
In plain language
An education loan exists to fund higher study for a student and their family, and it comes with one condition attached at the very start: you need an admission offer before you can even apply.
That requirement changes the order of things for a student. First comes securing admission to an institution; only then comes arranging the loan to pay for it. The government has also built a dedicated online gateway, the Vidyalakshmi Portal, so a student does not have to approach each bank separately.
How it works
Chapter 8's definition: "Education loan is required for students and family to meet the financial goal of higher education. Students should have an admission offer from an institution before they apply for education loan."
Chapter 9 describes the government route through the Vidyalakshmi Portal (www.vidyalakshmi.co.in): its objective is "to provide easy and effective system of getting educational loans so that no student leaves his or her education mid-way due to lack of funds." Through it, students can see information on educational loan schemes across banks, use a common educational loan application form, apply to multiple banks through a single form, and track their application status on a dashboard. The portal is also linked to the national scholarship portal, so a student can check scholarship options through the same gateway.
A worked example
Anjali secures admission to an engineering college with an annual fee of Rs 1,80,000. Only after receiving her formal admission offer does she become eligible to apply for an education loan — the booklet's prerequisite in practice.
Instead of visiting five different bank branches, she registers on the Vidyalakshmi Portal, fills the common application form once, and submits it to three banks through the same platform. She tracks each bank's response on the portal's dashboard rather than calling each branch separately.
While on the portal, she also checks the linked national scholarship portal and finds a merit scholarship covering Rs 30,000 of her Rs 1,80,000 annual fee — reducing the amount she actually needs to borrow from the bank for that year.
Why NISM asks about it
Chapter 8 (Borrowing-Related Products) states the admission-offer prerequisite; Chapter 9's Vidyalakshmi Portal section describes the government mechanism for applying. Expect the exam to test the admission-before-application rule and the features of the Vidyalakshmi Portal — the common application form, multi-bank applications, and the national scholarship portal link.
Common exam traps
- An admission offer must come before the loan application, not after. A student cannot apply for an education loan on the strength of an intended course alone.
- The Vidyalakshmi Portal is a single gateway to apply to multiple banks, not a lender itself — it does not disburse the loan; the bank does.
- The portal links to the national scholarship portal, so scholarship information and loan applications sit in the same place, but they remain separate benefits — a scholarship reduces the amount needed, it does not replace the loan application process.
- The booklet does not state a specific interest rate, loan amount ceiling or repayment moratorium for education loans — only the admission prerequisite and the portal mechanism.

1.What must a student have before applying for an education loan?
- a)A guarantor with a housing loan
- b)An admission offer from an institution
- c)A completed first semester at the institution
- d)A minimum credit score of their own
Show the answer
Answer: (b) An admission offer from an institution
"Education loan is required for students and family to meet the financial goal of HIGHER EDUCATION. STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE AN ADMISSION OFFER FROM AN INSTITUTION BEFORE THEY APPLY for education loan." The sequence is fixed — offer first, application second. You cannot borrow to bid for a seat you have not been given, and equally you need not wait until the term has begun, which is a common and costly misunderstanding that leaves families scrambling for fees. Chapter 9 adds a further route worth knowing: the Vidyalakshmi portal at www.vidyalakshmi.co.in, whose objective is "to provide easy and effective system of getting educational loans so that no student leaves his or her education mid-way due to lack of funds", offering a common application form, the ability to apply to several banks at once, a link to the national scholarship portal, and a dashboard to track the application.
2.A family needs ₹4,00,000 for a child's engineering course. The child holds an admission offer. A personal loan is available immediately. What is the better course and why?
- a)Take the personal loan, since speed matters and no security is needed
- b)Take an education loan, which is purpose-tied and concessional, since the required admission offer is already in hand — a personal loan is dearest precisely because it needs no collateral
- c)Take a consumer durable loan, which covers education expenses
- d)Take a gold loan, since education loans require a guarantor

Answer: (b) Take an education loan, which is purpose-tied and concessional, since the required admission offer is already in hand — a personal loan is dearest precisely because it needs no collateral
The chapter names the right instrument: "Education loan is required for students and family to meet the financial goal of higher education", and the precondition is already satisfied — "students should have an ADMISSION OFFER from an institution BEFORE they apply." Chapter 9 adds the Vidyalakshmi portal, whose objective is "that no student leaves his or her education mid-way due to lack of funds", with a common application form for several banks and a link to the national scholarship portal. Against that, the personal loan's selling points are the reasons it costs more: "can be utilized for ANY PURPOSE... NO COLLATERAL SECURITY IS REQUIRED." A lender with nothing to seize and no purpose to verify prices that risk into the rate. Speed is a genuine convenience, but paying a materially higher rate for four years of fees to save a few weeks of paperwork is an expensive trade — and option (c) misdescribes the consumer durable loan, which is for "television, refrigerator" and similar goods.
