Activities
The specific tasks and actions a project undertakes, using its inputs, to produce the desired outputs — the second link in the logic model chain.
In plain language
Activities are what a project does.
In the logic model chain, inputs → activities → outputs → outcomes → impact, activities are where resources are turned into work: running training sessions, building check dams, distributing materials, signing partnerships.
Chapter 1 defines them as the initiatives that an organisation or project undertakes to achieve the desired goal, such as providing vocational training to women to achieve financial empowerment, or giving financial aid to poor patients to improve their health and productivity.
Chapter 4 is more operational: activities are the specific tasks and actions undertaken to produce the desired outputs. They are the project's step-by-step implementation plan, and the workbook calls them its operational core.
The word also has a second, regulatory meaning in the SSE chapters. A social enterprise must engage in at least one eligible activity, and an FPSE needs 67% of its activities to qualify. That is about the enterprise's line of work. This page is about the logic-model link.
How it works
What makes a good activity statement (Chapter 4, 4.2.7). Activities are typically detailed, sequenced and resource-dependent, and need planning and coordination. They answer:
- What tasks need to be performed to produce the outputs?
- Who will carry out these tasks, and when?
They should be logically sequenced to avoid delays or overlaps. Clearly defined activities make resource allocation efficient and create accountability.
In the logic model flow (4.3). Activities are "the actions or logical sequences of actions intended to achieve the desired results".
In the logical framework matrix. Each activity gets its own indicator, means of verification and assumptions. Chapter 4's worked financial-literacy project for rural women:

Where they sit in the chain. Inputs support activities; activities produce outputs. Chapter 4's logic model flow (4.3) says outputs measure the activities or targets set in every project activity, and Chapter 6's second sample question reuses that wording. In Chapter 6's Theory of Change questions, activities are the part that explains what a project will do.
A worked example
An illustrative project; figures are made up.
Jal Samriddhi Foundation lists a ₹1.1 crore water-conservation project on an SSE for 25 villages in Bundelkhand. Its design separates the chain like this:

Budget per activity: survey ₹6 lakh; check dams ₹72 lakh; desilting ₹22 lakh; committee training ₹10 lakh. Check: 6 + 72 + 22 + 10 = ₹110 lakh = ₹1.1 crore.
Why the sequence matters. Surveying comes before construction so that dams are placed where catchments drain. Committees are trained before handover so someone maintains the structures. If desilting ran before the survey, the foundation would risk the delays and overlaps Chapter 4 warns about.
The reporting slip. A mid-term update that says "check-dam construction is under way in 25 villages" reports an activity. An assessor would want the output, how many dams are finished, and in time the outcome.
Why NISM asks about it
Chapter 1 (10% weightage) defines activities among the concepts and terms in social sector interventions. Chapter 4 (10%) covers them in the LFA components (4.2.7), the logic model flow (4.3) and the worked logframe matrix. Chapter 4's sample question asks what "Activities" are in a Logical Framework (tasks and actions implemented to achieve outputs). Chapter 6's fourth sample question asks which part of a Theory of Change explains what a project will do (Activities). Chapter 5 says the Social Project Monitoring Framework details inputs, activities, outputs, outcomes and impact.
Common exam traps
- Activities produce outputs; they are not outputs. "Conducting workshops" is an activity. "50 workshops conducted" is an output, and also the indicator for that activity.
- Not inputs either. Trainers and money are inputs. Training is the activity.
- Not outcomes. "Immediate outcomes of a project" is the wrong option in Chapter 4's sample question.
- Each activity has its own indicator, means of verification and assumption in the logframe matrix.
- Two meanings of "activities". Eligible activities (the 18 in Regulation 292E) decide whether an enterprise qualifies for the SSE. Logic-model activities are a project's tasks.

The exit plan comes towards the end. Impact is measured over years. The listing itself precedes the t0 year.

Regulation 292E of the SEBI ICDR Regulations requires an NPO or FPSE to establish primacy of social intent.
"Social impact" is a tempting distractor because the workbook also uses the phrase "primacy of social intent/impact" as a heading — but the regulation's wording is social intent. Outcomes and activities are parts of the results chain, not the eligibility test.
