Output
The tangible, countable product or service a project's activities directly produce — immediate evidence of progress, but no guarantee that the project's actual purpose has been achieved.
In plain language
If a project trains 500 farmers, that number — 500 — is not yet proof that anything changed for them. It is only proof that the training happened. Logical Framework Analysis calls that count the output.
The workbook's definition: outputs are the "tangible and measurable products, services, or results generated by the project's activities." They are the project's direct deliverables, usually quantitative, time-bound, and verifiable.
Outputs answer three questions: what results will the activities produce, how many and by when, and who benefits from them directly.
The workbook is careful to add a limit: "outputs alone do not guarantee the achievement of the project purpose." A project can hit every output target and still fail to change anything that matters.
How it works
Output sits in the workbook's logic-model chain, produced by Activities and feeding into Outcomes:
Inputs → Activities → Output → Outcome → Impact
In the workbook's Logical Framework Matrix (Chapter 4, section 4.4), the output level is one of the matrix's core rows, alongside impact, outcomes and activities.
The BACO Ratio case, discussed elsewhere in the workbook (Chapter 7, section 7.4), shows what goes wrong when output gets mistaken for outcome or impact: a metric presented as measuring "cost per outcome or cost per social impact" can, on inspection, "actually focus on output." Chapter 8's case studies are full of output figures reported this way — for example "5,000 cataract surgeries" performed, or "1,265 families" whose homes were repaired — real, verifiable numbers about delivery, not yet about the change that delivery caused.
A worked example

Under Swagruha's Niwas project, the NPO repairs the homes of 1,265 families living in Mumbai's slums, spending about Rs 4.67 crore. "1,265 homes repaired" is the output — a concrete, countable, verified deliverable.
The output alone does not say whether those families are now safer or healthier — that would be the outcome (a measured drop in monsoon-related illness among repaired households) and eventually the impact (longer-term gains in stability once safe housing frees up money once spent on repeated repairs).
A report that stops at "1,265 homes repaired" and calls it "impact achieved" makes exactly the mistake the workbook warns against.
Why NISM asks about it
Chapter 4 (Understanding Logic Model in Social Programs for Social Impact Assessment), section 4.2.6, defines output and its three guiding questions. Section 4.3 restates it as measuring "the activities or targets set to be accomplished in every project activity." Chapter 8's case studies (5,000 cataract surgeries, 1,265 homes repaired) are the workbook's own output figures. Expect a question distinguishing output from outcome.
Common exam traps
- Output is a count of what was delivered; outcome is the change that delivery caused.
- "Outputs alone do not guarantee the achievement of the project purpose" — a direct workbook line and a frequent trap.
- Outputs should be quantitative, time-bound and verifiable.
- Do not confuse output with the BACO Ratio, which the workbook criticises for being framed as an outcome/impact metric while "actually" measuring output.
