Objective Tree

The tool built in Logical Framework Analysis's Objective Analysis step, mirroring the Problem Tree but restating every problem as a positive, SMART-aligned objective.

In plain language

Once a project understands its problem through a Problem Tree, it needs to turn that understanding into a plan. Logical Framework Analysis does this with the Objective Tree.

The workbook's definition: the Objective Tree "mirrors the Problem Tree, but replaces problems with desired outcomes." Every root cause on the Problem Tree becomes a positive objective. Every negative effect becomes a hoped-for improvement.

The result shows how fixing root causes can lead to real, long-term gains. This step is called Objective Analysis, and it turns a diagnosis into statements the project can act on.

The workbook is specific about the standard these objectives must meet: they are built using the SMART criteria — specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.

How it works

Objective Analysis is the second step of Logical Framework Analysis (Chapter 4, section 4.2.3), directly following Problem Analysis. The Objective Tree is built by taking each Problem Tree statement and reframing it positively:

The workbook requires every objective on the tree to meet the SMART test: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This matters because the next LFA step, Alternatives Analysis, evaluates different strategies for reaching these objectives on feasibility, cost-effectiveness, time and impact — and that evaluation is not possible if the objectives themselves are vague.

A worked example

Building on the same illustrative school-attendance case; figures are made up.

Continuing the earlier Problem Tree on poor school attendance, the NPO builds its Objective Tree by flipping each cause into an objective:

Each objective is now SMART: specific, measurable (km, toilet count, enrolment %), achievable within stated resources, relevant to the original attendance problem, and time-bound. The NPO can now move to Alternatives Analysis to choose which strategy delivers these objectives most cost-effectively.

Why NISM asks about it

Chapter 4 (Understanding Logic Model in Social Programs for Social Impact Assessment), section 4.2.3 (Objective Analysis), defines the Objective Tree as a mirror of the Problem Tree and requires every resulting objective to meet the SMART criteria. Expect a question asking which LFA step builds the Objective Tree.

Common exam traps

  • The Objective Tree mirrors the Problem Tree structurally — same shape, opposite content: problems become objectives, causes become means, effects become ends.
  • Objectives on the tree must be SMART — a vague restatement of the problem does not satisfy Objective Analysis.
  • Objective Analysis is step two; do not place it before Problem Analysis or confuse it with Alternatives Analysis, which comes next.
