Empanelment
The compulsory registration of a distributor with an AMC, or as a sub-agent of an already-empanelled distributor, without which mutual fund schemes cannot be sold or commission earned.
In plain language
Passing the NISM exam and getting an ARN is not enough to actually sell a mutual fund. A distributor still has to be empanelled — registered — with the specific AMC whose schemes they want to sell.
The process itself is simple. A distributor fills a Request for Empanelment Form with personal details, business scale, and bank information, and signs a declaration promising to follow the rules. There is no single standard form — each AMC designs its own.
Once empanelled, the distributor can sell that AMC's schemes and earn commission. Without it, they cannot — even with a valid ARN and NISM certificate in hand. A distributor can be empanelled with any number of AMCs, or work under someone who already is, as a sub-agent.
How it works
Chapter 6, section 6.4.1, lists what the Request for Empanelment Form covers: personal and business information (office area, branches, employees, AUM, number of agents), bank details for direct credit of brokerage, and a signed declaration. The declaration commits the distributor to, among other things, correctness of information, confidentiality, compliance with codes and circulars, no unapproved advertising, ensuring every selling employee has an EUIN, and not offering rebates or gifts to attract investors.
Two commercial realities sit inside the same section. First, the AMC has the power to terminate the empanelment at any time — it is not a fixed-term contract. Second, some AMCs empanel directly only the distributors likely to generate sufficient business, and steer smaller applicants to work as sub-agents under an already-empanelled distributor instead — where commission levels are sometimes linked to the volume the larger distributor generates.
A worked example
A newly NISM-certified individual, Ananya, has her ARN. She wants to sell three fund houses' schemes.
She submits a Request for Empanelment Form to each of the three AMCs, listing her ARN, PAN, expected AUM, and bank details for commission credit, and signs each AMC's own declaration. Fund House A empanels her directly. Fund House B, whose empanelment criteria favour distributors with an existing book of Rs 5 crore or more, instead invites her to operate as a sub-agent under an established distributor already empanelled with it — meaning she sells Fund House B's schemes but through that distributor's empanelment, not her own.
Eighteen months later, Fund House A terminates her empanelment after a compliance lapse. She can still sell Fund House B's and Fund House C's schemes; empanelment is AMC-specific, not industry-wide.
Why NISM asks about it
Chapter 6 (Fund Distribution and Channel Management Practices), section 6.4.1, walks through the empanelment procedure in detail, right after the ARN and KYD requirements. Expect a question on what empanelment adds beyond an ARN, and on the AMC's unilateral right to terminate it.
Common exam traps
- ARN and NISM certification are not empanelment. A certified, ARN-holding distributor still cannot sell a specific AMC's schemes until empanelled with that AMC.
- Empanelment is per-AMC, not universal. Losing empanelment with one AMC does not affect standing with another.
- The AMC can terminate empanelment at any time — there is no guaranteed notice period in the workbook's description.
- There is no single standard form. Each AMC's Request for Empanelment Form and declaration can differ.

Answer: (b) NISM Series V-A certification and an EUIN from AMFI, working under the institution's ARN — no separate ARN is required
"Institutions that are into the distribution of mutual funds need to register with AMFI. The EMPLOYEES of these institutions need to CLEAR THE NISM SERIES V-A: Mutual Fund Distributors Certification Examination and obtain an EMPLOYEE UNIQUE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (EUIN) from AMFI. The Intermediaries have to ensure that the employees QUOTE THE EUIN IN THE APPLICATION FORM for their client's investments. THERE IS NO SEPARATE ARN REQUIRED for these employees since they OPERATE UNDER THE ARN OF THE INSTITUTION that they are working for." Option (c) is wrong because the certification and EUIN are individual obligations — and the empanelment declaration requires the firm to "ensure that all employees who are engaged in selling or marketing of mutual funds have an EUIN." Since 1 October 2024, applications for both ARN and EUIN are accepted online only through the AMFI website; "the paper-based process is henceforth discontinued."
