Employee Unique Identification Number
Also written EUIN · Employee Unique Identification Number (EUIN)
The number AMFI gives each certified employee of a mutual fund distributor. It is written on the client's application alongside the distributor's ARN, identifying the individual who sold the scheme.
In plain language
When a bank or a large broking firm sells mutual funds, the firm holds the ARN. But the person who actually sat with the client and recommended the scheme is an employee.
The EUIN identifies that employee. It is written on the application form next to the firm's ARN, so that if the advice turns out to be unsuitable, or the form was filled in wrongly, it is clear who handled the sale.
It is an accountability tool first. It ties every regular-plan sale to a named, certified individual rather than to a faceless institution.
How it works
Who needs one (Chapter 6): institutions distributing mutual funds register with AMFI. Their employees must clear NISM Series V-A and obtain an EUIN from AMFI. "There is no separate ARN required for these employees since they operate under the ARN of the institution that they are working for."
Where it goes: intermediaries must ensure that employees quote the EUIN in the application form for their clients' investments.
Empanelment declaration: when a distributor empanels with an AMC it undertakes to "ensure that all employees who are engaged in selling or marketing of mutual funds have an EUIN".
Code of Conduct (Chapter 12):
- Individual MFDs obtain NISM certification, register with AMFI and obtain an ARN and an EUIN.
- Non-individual MFDs obtain an ARN and ensure their sales personnel hold a valid NISM certificate and AMFI registration / EUIN.
- MFDs must quote a valid ARN and EUIN in the client's application or transaction feed to place Regular Plan transactions and receive commission.
- To prevent fraudulent or tampered forms, the EUIN of the concerned employee must be written on application forms for identification.
- NISM certification and AMFI registration must be renewed on a timely basis.
Process: from October 1, 2024, applications for ARN and EUIN are accepted only online through the AMFI website.
A worked example
Names and amounts are illustrative.
Priya is a relationship manager at a private bank's Nagpur branch. The bank holds an ARN as an institutional distributor. Priya has passed NISM Series V-A and holds her own EUIN.
A customer, Mr Joshi, 62, invests Rs 8,00,000 in the Regular Plan of a hybrid scheme on Priya's recommendation. The form carries:
| Field | Entry |
|---|---|
| Distributor code | The bank's ARN |
| Employee code | Priya's EUIN |
Trail commission on the Rs 8 lakh is paid to the bank, under its ARN. Priya does not get a separate ARN or a separate commission stream from the AMC.
Six months later Mr Joshi complains that he was told the scheme gave "assured monthly income". Because Priya's EUIN is on the form, the bank and the AMC can see exactly who handled the sale. The Code of Conduct forbids MFDs and their employees from mis-selling on the basis of indicative or assured returns, so the complaint can be investigated against a named, certified person.
Had the form carried the ARN but no EUIN, it would have broken the Code of Conduct requirement to write the EUIN on application forms for identification.
Why NISM asks about it
Chapter 6 (Fund Distribution and Channel Management Practices) explains why employees of institutional distributors need an EUIN rather than an ARN and includes the EUIN undertaking in the empanelment declaration. Chapter 12 (Mutual Fund Scheme Selection) sets out the Code of Conduct for MFDs, including quoting ARN and EUIN. Expect: who issues it (AMFI), who needs it (employees selling MFs), and whether employees need their own ARN (no).
Common exam traps
- EUIN identifies the employee; ARN identifies the distributor. Both appear on the application.
- Employees of an institution do not need a separate ARN. They sell under the institution's ARN.
- AMFI issues the EUIN, after the employee clears NISM Series V-A.
- Individual MFDs obtain both an ARN and an EUIN under the Code of Conduct.
- Commission follows the ARN, not the EUIN.
- Online only from October 1, 2024; the paper process is discontinued.

1.The Mutual Fund Distributors Certification Examination required for becoming a mutual fund distributor is offered by:
- a)Securities and Exchange Board of India
- b)National Institute of Securities Markets
- c)Association of Mutual Funds in India
- d)National Skills Development Corporation

Answer: (b) National Institute of Securities Markets
The chapter's second sample question. "SEBI has MANDATED mutual fund distributors, agents or any persons employed or to be employed in the sale and/or distribution of mutual fund products, to have a VALID CERTIFICATION FROM THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF SECURITIES MARKETS (NISM) by passing NISM Series-V-A: Mutual Fund Distributors Certification Examination." Keep the three bodies apart, because the distractors are built on confusing them: SEBI mandates the requirement, NISM conducts the examination and specifies the CPE classroom credits, and AMFI runs the KYD process and allots the ARN and the EUIN. The AMC then empanels the distributor. Each of the four appears in this chapter doing something different.
2.An employee of a national distribution company sells mutual funds to the firm's clients. What registration does the employee need?
- a)A separate ARN of his own, in addition to the firm's ARN
- b)NISM Series V-A certification and an EUIN from AMFI, working under the institution's ARN — no separate ARN is required
- c)Nothing, since the firm holds the ARN
- d)Only a KYD acknowledgement from CAMS-PoS
Show the answer
Answer: (b) NISM Series V-A certification and an EUIN from AMFI, working under the institution's ARN — no separate ARN is required
"Institutions that are into the distribution of mutual funds need to register with AMFI. The EMPLOYEES of these institutions need to CLEAR THE NISM SERIES V-A: Mutual Fund Distributors Certification Examination and obtain an EMPLOYEE UNIQUE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (EUIN) from AMFI. The Intermediaries have to ensure that the employees QUOTE THE EUIN IN THE APPLICATION FORM for their client's investments. THERE IS NO SEPARATE ARN REQUIRED for these employees since they OPERATE UNDER THE ARN OF THE INSTITUTION that they are working for." Option (c) is wrong because the certification and EUIN are individual obligations — and the empanelment declaration requires the firm to "ensure that all employees who are engaged in selling or marketing of mutual funds have an EUIN." Since 1 October 2024, applications for both ARN and EUIN are accepted online only through the AMFI website; "the paper-based process is henceforth discontinued."
3.Which of these does NOT trigger the commission disclosure and due diligence requirements for a distributor?
- a)Multiple point presence of more than 20 locations
- b)AUM raised over Rs 100 crores across the industry in the non-institutional category including HNIs
- c)Commission received of over Rs 1 crore per annum across the industry
- d)Employing more than 50 persons who hold an EUIN
Show the answer
Answer: (d) Employing more than 50 persons who hold an EUIN
SEBI uses the same four criteria for both the commission disclosure obligation in 6.6 and the due diligence obligation in 6.7, and any one of them is enough: "(a) Multiple point presence (MORE THAN 20 LOCATIONS); (b) AUM raised OVER RS. 100 CRORES across the industry in the non-institutional category but including high net worth individuals (HNIs); (c) The commission received of OVER RS. 1 CRORE P.A. ACROSS INDUSTRY; (d) The commission received of OVER RS. 50 LAKHS FROM A SINGLE mutual fund." Headcount of EUIN holders is not among them. A fifth, separate trigger exists for additional due diligence: "In case the data indicates that a distributor has an EXCESSIVE PORTFOLIO TURNOVER RATIO, i.e., MORE THAN TWO TIMES THE INDUSTRY AVERAGE, AMCs conduct an ADDITIONAL DUE DILIGENCE of such distributors." Beyond the commission figures, AMCs must also disclose yearly, distributor-wise, "GROSS INFLOWS (indicating whether the distributor is an ASSOCIATE OR GROUP COMPANY of the sponsor(s)), NET INFLOWS, AVERAGE ASSETS UNDER MANAGEMENT and RATIO OF AUM TO GROSS INFLOWS."
